THIS MONTH ON CAMPUS:
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK! Join us for the University of Calgary’s second annual Mental Health Awareness Week October 7th – 12th, 2013! The SU Wellness Centre along with numerous groups on and off campus would like to bring all students, staff and faculty together to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma, build resiliency and encourage students to help themselves and others. Join us for a variety of activities including workshops, an opening reception (art show and musicians), a film screening, an addictions photography exhibit, an interactive depression screening tool and 'Outrun the Stigma', the FIRST Mental Health Awareness Run in Western Canada. To register for the run, please click here. Watch our awareness video from 2012 here! Special thank you to the Student Advocates for Mental Health student club! The Canada We Want is a three-day summit (October 31 - November 2, 2013) bringing together a coalition of Canadians advocating for democracy, the environment and Aboriginal treaty rights. The majority of Canadians value Human Rights, we care about people who are hurting, and we give millions in world aid. This is no different – it’s just closer to home. This is our country, our children’s future at risk. More information and to RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/531815006867749/ |
Career and Employment Tip
by Angela Judge-Stasiak Career Specialist (Education and Social Work) Career Services University of Calgary As employees, human beings, and students we have many roles. The pressure of doing well in your studies as well as managing all of our other personal commitments can be very challenging. When I speak to students who are seeking practicum, or employment I encourage them to remember that it is important to take time for self-care. Talking to employers about what you have to offer, attending interviews and preparing effective resumes and cover letters is hard work. Reward yourself, surround yourself with good people who make you laugh and do your best to eat well, drink plenty of water and rest up. I am here to help with your career development, only an email away: [email protected] UpStart, a United Way initiative, invites you to attend its annual Connect Event.
The Connect Event is a full day event that brings teachers, school system administrators and service providers in an engaging, interactive learning environment. The theme of the Medicine Wheel will be incorporated throughout the day. The format will include teachings and activities around the four dimensions of the Medicine Wheel: spiritual, physical, mental and emotional. There will be space for open dialogue, sharing of promising practices, speakers, a trade show and an update on UpStart and its Aboriginal Youth and Education Strategy's Full Circle work. This is a great opportunity to connect with people, organizations and school supporting Aboriginal students! There is no cost to attend but we ask that you RSVP as space is limited. Free parking available. Light morning snacks and lunch will be provided.
