SWSA Meeting #3

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

1.        Ben Cannon, VP Student Life, Students’ Union attended the meeting.  Ben explained that there are proposed changes to the way Faculty Clubs are governed and funded.  SWSA will be kept in the loop about these proposed changes by the Students’ Union.

2.       United Way Fundraisers.  SWSA would like to be involved in all of the upcoming United Way fundraisers.
The Day of Change: October 25: 11:30 – 1:30 – SWSA will have as many members present as possible.
Bake Sale: Each SWSA member will bake at least one dozen baked goods.  A couple of members will volunteer at the table.
Mini golf tournament: SWSA has at least one team for the tournament.

3.       SWSA Christmas Party for the Faculty of Social Work: A toy drive will be held for the Calgary Women’s Centre.  The new date for this event is December 6, from 12 noon until 1pm.  It will be a potluck.  All students, staff, family and friends are welcome!

We will be asking all students and faculty members attending the party to bring new, unwrapped gifts for children.  They have a priority need for kids ages 8 to 12; gift cards for teenagers; and gift baskets for women.

4.       SWSA Membership fee of $1 was collected today, and the membership list was handed in to the Social Work office.  This list will be used to hand out the SWSA office key.  Student IDs will be used as collateral.

5.       A discussion was held that SWSA needs to recruit more members; specifically more third year social work students.  SWSA member Naomi volunteered to help with recruitment by giving her class information about SWSA and upcoming events.

6.       Three workshops through the U of C Community Helpers’ program will be held in the Faculty of Social Work: 1.  The Helping Skill (Proposed date of Wednesday, November 13 at 3:30pm), 2.  Enabling and Handling Stress (Proposed date of Friday, November 22 at Noon), and 3.  Relationships (Proposed date of (Thursday November 28 at Noon).  Dates to be finalized ASAP.

SWSA Meeting

Date: October 8, 2013

2:00pm – 3:30pm

SWSA Office

1.       Would anyone be interested in attending the ‘Outrun the Stigma’ Walk/Run taking place on October 12 at 10am?  Erin is going to email a member that had expressed interest in being involved in some other Mental Health Awareness Week events to see if she was attending the walk already.

2.      In support of National Addiction Awareness Week - November 18 - 24, 2013 there will be a Wellness Walk on Monday, November 18, at 10:30 am – 2:00pm.  This is through the ACSW.  Lauren and Erin will be starting to recruit SWSA members and other Faculty of Social Work students to attend the walk.

3.      Social Work Week is taking place on March 2 – 9, 2014.  Planning for this will start right away.  Anyone who has ideas for celebrating this on campus is welcome to help plan the events, or can speak to any SWSA member.

4.      The Faculty of Social Work Holiday Party has been planned for Friday, November 29 at 12 noon.  It will be a potluck again (as it was last year), and students and faculty members will be asked to bring a copy of their recipe.
This year at the party, we will be doing a Holiday Toy Drive for the Women’s Centre of Calgary.  We will be asking all students and faculty members attending the party to bring new, unwrapped gifts for children.  They have a priority need for kids ages 8 to 12; gift cards for teenagers; and gift baskets for women.

5.      The SWSA budget was discussed.  We currently have enough money to carry the club through the next two years (approximately).  The only cost that we currently have is insurance: $25/year.  However, we have been spending money on food (pizza party, meetings, etc), supplies (posters, paper, etc.), and t-shirts.  We have not brought in any income except for a few small donations in over one year.
The club must decide how we will stay sustainable for the future.
We discussed taking donations during events (Social Work Week events, etc.).

6.      The Club must take a membership fee from every member (this is a rule set by the Students’ Union).  This is currently set at a minimum of $1 per member, so that no student will feel restricted by the membership fee.
SWSA will be collecting the membership fee at the next meeting (Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the SWSA Office.  It is $1, or by donation.

7.  A poll has been created regarding SWSA meeting dates and times.  A link to this can be found on the left-hand side of the SWSA website (http://calgaryswsa.weebly.com).  If you are interested in attending SWSA meetings, please visit the website and fill out the poll.  For now, meetings will be held on Tuesdays at 2pm.

8.      The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 2:00pm in the SWSA Office (Room 4253 in the Professional Faculties Building)

If you have any questions about the meeting, please email [email protected].
